The developments of the World-Class Research Center in materials science were presented in Italy

The team of Tomsk State University took part in the 16th International Workshop on Combustion and Propulsion (16-IWCP) “Energy Materials: Laboratory Research, Modeling, Applications” in Italy. Tomsk research groups presented the results of work in the field of high-energy and special materials, for example, the study of aluminum-magnesium powders, additive technologies, neutralization of chemical agents, and more.

The International Workshop on Combustion and Propulsion (IWCP) was founded in 1990 by the Space Propulsion Laboratory (SPLab) of the Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy). This year the workshop was focused on the latest advances and emerging trends in combustion, rocket engines and energy materials uniting the leading researchers from Germany, Israel, India, Italy, China, Russia, USA, France, and Czech Republic.

Tomsk was represented by the team of the World-Class Research Center “New Special-Purpose Materials”, as well as the strategic technological project “Security Technologies”, carried out as part of the Tomsk State University Development Program “Priority 2030”.

Professor Alexander Vorozhtsov, Director of the Center for Management of Scientific, Technological and Innovative Projects of TSU, made a presentation on the World-Class Research Center Development Program in the field of high-energy and special materials. In particular, one of the tasks of the center is the export of domestic technologies to strengthen Russia’s technological leadership in foreign markets. Thus, the technologies produced at the World-Class Research Center – antimicrobial and biocompatible materials – are already being tested in Myanmar and Indonesia. In May 2026, Tomsk State University and DRDO (India) signed a protocol of intent to export technologies developed at TSU to India.

— The IWCP is a regular international event that brings together high-quality researchers from around the world. This kind of event makes it possible to exchange experience with colleagues and present our products to potential industrial partners. TSU developments were highly appreciated by our colleagues, since we solve key tasks in the field of security, AI, development of new materials, medicine, and are also open to joint projects, – said Alexander Vorozhtsov. – It is important that young university scientists from my team took part in the conference.

The reports were grouped into nine main thematic areas, covering the entire cycle of creation and application of high-energy materials – from fundamental chemistry to applied modeling. The main theme was the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in the design of new high-energy materials.

For reference: The World-Class Research Center “New Special Purpose Materials” was established by the decision of the Commission for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation in May 2025 within the framework of the national project “New Materials and Chemistry”. Tomsk State University is the coordinator of the center. The World-Class Research Center development program is officially supported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the administration of Tomsk Region.
