The authors of the subject rankings of world universities RUR (Round University Ranking) published the rankings of 2025. They have two groups: six positions – in expanded subject areas, including humanities, life sciences, medical, natural, social and technical sciences, and twenty-six – in narrow areas. Tomsk State University holds a total of fourth position among Russian universities and 172nd in the world, and is also included in the world top 100 in three extended subject areas.
In the field of humanities, Tomsk State University is the leader in Russia, holding the 63rd place in the world, in technical sciences – 2nd position in the Russian Federation (88th in the world), and in natural sciences it is in the Russian top 3 (83rd position in the world). In general, in almost all subject areas of the ranking TSU is among the top 10 Russian universities.
– Traditionally, Tomsk State University is known for a variety of areas of research based on very powerful scientific schools, – notes TSU Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Alexander Zamyatin. – The university development program focuses on four strategic projects that explore environmental issues, social and humanitarian engineering, engineering biology and the creation of new materials and technologies. They all rely on fundamental scientific groundwork that allows regularly publishing scientific results in highly ranked domestic and foreign journals.
Alexander Zamyatin emphasizes that at the same time there is also access to industrial partners with the creation of appropriate advanced products in the field of chemistry, detectors, safety technologies, therefore, the scientific results of TSU can be brought to the market as completed technological products. This makes it possible to move quite efficiently and dynamically in various rankings, including RUR.
The world top 100 rankings in expanded subject areas, except for TSU, included Moscow State University (in all six areas), Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (natural and technical sciences) and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (natural sciences). In the top 100 ranking in narrow subject areas, Russian universities are found only in the ranking for nuclear education and technology: Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (4th position), Tomsk Polytechnic University (53) and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (55).
In total, more than a hundred Russian universities are present in the subject ranking of world universities RUR 2025. The number of the world universities ranges from 400 (nuclear education and technology) to 1,065 (technical sciences).
It should be added that different methods were used to form rankings for expanded and narrow subject areas.
Extended subject rankings were based on a methodology close to the parameters of the overall ranking of world universities RUR. The assessment was carried out on the basis of 20 indicators distributed in four areas of universities: education, research, financial stability, internationalization.
For narrow subject areas, rankings were formed on the basis of five scientometric indicators: number of articles prepared by the university in a particular subject area; number of citations in a certain subject area; number of citations per university article of a particular subject area; number of patents citing the university research; number of highly cited scientific papers.
