TSU Institute of Distance Education held the first celebration of Yandex Day

For the first time in its history, TSU Institute of Distance Education celebrated Yandex Day. The participants included the head of the Yandex HR Tech Department, Oleg Mokhov, and the head of the Yandex HR Tech Laboratory, Dmitriy Prokofiev. Over a hundred TSU students representing various departments attended the event to meet the experts and get insights on job opportunities.

Attendees of the lectures learned how university background can affect future work, why intern and junior developers are two different concepts, and what graduates aiming to become senior developers should anticipate. Additionally, speakers shared the ins and outs of being an intern at Yandex and gave advice on building a successful career.

“I am very satisfied with the event. I enjoyed answering the questions—it was clear that the students were interested and willing to learn something new, and I believe this is exactly what I came here for. In a certain sense we represented the public image of Yandex and showed that we are not just faceless project developers, but also actual people who can discuss their experience in a social setting,” Oleg Mokhov pinpointed.

Experts emphasized how important finishing a university course can be: Upon completion, a potential job candidate acquires basic knowledge, and learns how to learn, analyze big chunks of information fast, and work in a team.

Speakers elaborated that a Yandex internship can last three, four, or even six months depending on a student’s academic workload. An intern is recruited on a paid basis, with a possibility of getting re-recruited, but the requirements are tough.

“Early-career staff members often experience the Dunning-Kruger effect: At first they feel competent and ready to do anything, but then they face major challenges and consider their skills to be lackluster and finally gain more confidence by achieving a moderate level,” the experts added.

For a streamlined career path, Yandex representatives advise starting off as an intern, then continue as a junior: Although intern-level tasks may seem simple, they can expose a person’s potential for self-guided work. Whereas those who directly aim for junior-level tasks may solve the usual tasks well, yet are usually advised to learn more about the general principle of work, be more patient with themselves and others, and read more.
