TSU rose in the Interfax National Universities Rankings

The Russian news agency Interfax published its 2023 national rankings of Russian universities. Tomsk State University ranked 6th, reinforcing its reputation and further solidifying its position in the national top 10.

The top 3 universities—Moscow State University, Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology—preserved their positions. The list is comprised of 368 Russian universities in total, with each university being evaluated on six criteria: educational activity, research output, social environment, collaborations, brand building, and innovations and technological entrepreneurship.

TSU entered the top 10 in all criteria by improving in certain aspects: the university took 8th place for educational activity; 3rd place for social environment; 10th place for collaborations; 9th place for brand building; and 6th place for innovations and technological entrepreneurship.

“The annual evaluation results show that Russian universities continue developing while undergoing fundamental transformation. The contemporary universities are finding new ways to reinforce their appeal and maintain communication with the academic community, mass audience, and businesses. Through nonbiased expertise we can see the possibilities and growth areas that ensure universities’ stability in the education market and their attractiveness for new applicants, industrial partners, and employers,” comments Aleksey Gorshkov, first deputy of Interfax general director.

Deputy governor of Tomsk Oblast, Lyudmila Ogorodova, outlined the region’s involvement in reinforcing the prestige and marketability of academia in Tomsk.

“The increase in the universities’ rankings implies an increase in responsibility for the Tomsk administration. Our track record is studied in the capital city as well as other regions, and with each year it is becoming harder to secure previously achieved places. Yet it is much more satisfying to see better results,” comments Lyudmila Ogorodova.

The expertise is based on review of the applications submitted by the universities and publicly available data released on the universities’ websites, the website of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, and SPARK and SCAN, the Interfax information and analysis systems.
