TSU Siberian Design Center will develop creative industries in Myanmar

The delegation of Tomsk State University and the World-Class Research Center (WCRC) “New Special-Purpose Materials” visited the leading engineering and technical university of Myanmar – Yangon Technological University. Both sides agreed for further collaboration in the field of industrial design, as well as design of traditional folk crafts.

– Following the meeting at Yangon University of Technology, we agreed to work together with Best Industrial Co., one of the leaders in the clothing industry in Myanmar, – said Viktor Klimenko, director of the TSU Siberian Design Center. – In particular, together with the Secretary General of the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA), Daw Khine Khine Nwe, we discussed collaboration in the field of design based on traditional folk crafts of the Republic of Myanmar and the further introduction of these products to international markets.

– We discussed work with local manufacturers in terms of industrial design and prototyping, – added Viktor Klimenko. – There was also a very interesting meeting with one of the main Buddhist monks in the world – Dr. Ashin Nyanissara. We preliminary agreed to hold a conference with his participation in Tomsk this fall. One of the sections of the conference will be devoted to Buddhist art and the role of art design in it.

During a visit to the city of Bagan, the experts from the Siberian Design Center of TSU were quite popular and gave advice on the exhibition design for the Bagan Archaeological Museum. Besides, TSU plans to collaborate with one of Bagan’s companies to design low-power pagoda lighting.

– In fact, this is the creation of a light design code for the ancient capital of Myanmar, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, – said Viktor Klimenko.

For reference: The Siberian Design Center was established at Tomsk State University in 2017. The center is engaged in research activities, training specialists in creative industries, as well as project activities for design and prototyping.

The World-Class Research Center “New Special Purpose Materials” (WCRC) was established by the decision of the Commission for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation in May 2025 as part of the national project “New Materials and Chemistry”. Tomsk State University is the coordinator of the center. The WCRC development program is officially supported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of the Russian Federation, and the administration of Tomsk Region.
