The Organic Synthesis Laboratory and the Novokhim company have developed the first domestic fire retardants (anti-flammable substances). Such retardants can be produced on the basis of Russian raw materials. Anti-flammable substances are necessary for the manufacture of any polymers, paints, and finishing materials due to modern requirements for interior decoration and wall insulation.

Scientists of the Faculty of Physics and Technology and their colleagues described the behavior of the "bone-endoprosthesis" system in the hip joint at low physiological loads such as walking, squatting, and turning. These calculations will improve the quality of prostheses and make them less expensive to manufacture. Besides, the patients’ quality of life will increase: it will be possible to create individual prostheses for a particular person by building a computer model that takes into account such parameters as weight, bone density, and so on. As a result, the wear of the prostheses will decrease as well as the number of operations to replace them.

The Department of Optics and Spectroscopy of the Faculty of Physics isdeveloping an express method for the determination of antibioticsin food using a fluorescent marker. At the moment, there are no approved methods of doing that, and it takes about two days to test food products for antibiotics. The new method will reduce this time to about 15 minutes.

Biologists along with their colleagues from Germany and the Czech Republic have identified about 300 previously unknown freshwater fish and marine species in the Russian Federation. It will allow taking more effective measures to preserve the fresh and brackish fish fauna of Russia. The results of the work have been presented in a scientific article published in the j Kyoto Imperial University’s journal Publications of the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory.

A postgraduate student at the Faculty of Geology and Geography has created the first-ever large-scale digital landscape map of Medny Island- a unique place with the rarest flora and fauna. Medny Island, discovered in 1741, is part of the Commander Islands, it is uninhabited and is a part of the biosphere reserve. Such a map will help to plan environmental protection roadmaps on the island, as well as conduct further research related to climate change.

Springer has published a collective monograph on multimodal optical methods for diagnosing cancer. One of the authors is Yuri Kistenyov , head of the Laboratory of Biophotonics, executive director of the TSU Institute for Biomedicine. The methods described in the book will help to increase the accuracy and speed of non-invasive detection of oncopathologies, as well as their monitor treatment.

TSU’s radiophysicists and psychologists have created a prototype of a system that creates 3D simulations of the process of evacuating people in case of fire. It calculates the behavior of characters in various psychological and physical states: calmness, stress, aggression, and so on. Such a system will be helpful for the units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations at the design stage and during the inspection of public places. It will help significantly reduce the number of victims in case of emergencies.
